The Losing Hand

I’m not going to bore you with the lyrics of “The Gambler” by Kenny Rodgers, but he was absolutely right, “you’ve got to know when to fold em.”  We experience this in life at every level with investments, relationships, job opportunities, diets and even initiatives on our own campuses.  Everyday we play hands that produce failure time and time again.  Why do we continue to play hands that we should be folding?  There are two main reasons.  First is because we feel obligated to do so because of outside pressures.  Second is because, in spite of what others share with us, we seem to think we know more than everyone else and in turn decide to go at something alone.  Both reasons lead to losing.

TAKE ACTION

What are the losing hands you continue to play on your campus?  Maybe it's something small like burdening your teachers to organize the school talent show when parent volunteers should take on the responsibility instead.  Maybe it’s something big like paying tens of thousands of dollars for programs that just aren’t working.  Whatever it is, exceptional leaders are BOLD enough to fold a losing hand. They know that giving up on failed initiatives is just as important as holding on to successful ones.

BE BOLD
