No Excuses Leadership

Hands Off the Wheel

I have many shortcomings as a leader, but the one I struggle with most is the ability to be patient and allow someone else to take control.  I’m a fixer.  I don’t like when problems are left unsolved.  While this impatient mindset can often be an asset when things need to get done, it’s a killer when you’re attempting to build capacity on your campus.  Developing new leaders is all about allowing them the experience of making decisions, setting agendas, and driving the conversation.  It also allows us the opportunity to improve other leadership skills related to observing and listening.

TAKE ACTION

For one day, with someone you trust, let them set the entire agenda.  It may be a colleague at work, a spouse at home, or a friend you are spending the day with.  Be present and participate, but let them lead.  Sometimes you’ll find it freeing to take your hands off the wheel and just be along for the ride.

BE BOLD
