Learn to Delegate

Do you think you're the best person for every job you're currently doing?  I hate to burst your bubble but, . . . you're not! That's why the best leaders are the ones who know how to delegate.

Delegating is not about passing the buck.  It's not about choosing the jobs you hate and giving them to those in more junior positions.  Delegating is about tapping into another's strengths, training them to be successful in a specific role, and allowing them to take on the responsibility.  When you think about it, delegating is really about leaders building leaders.

It sounds so practical.  But why are so many leaders terrible delegators? I think it's because so many of us (yes, me included) are control freaks.  We like to have things done a certain way and feel a duty to a level of quality that may not occur if we don't do the job ourselves. Or, so we think.  When we delegate, we learn a valuable lesson: We find that the the world somehow still functions without us in charge.

TAKE ACTION

The price we pay for not delegating is burnout.  At what point are your going to realize that you can't do it all yourself?  What areas of your job should be delegated?  Who can take on these roles?
