Walk With the Wise

Wisdom is found from those with experience.  There's so much we don't know that others have already learned.  Sometimes that learning comes from mistakes made along the way.  Other times from continuous improvement earned over the course of years in the business.  Unfortunately, walking with the wise is a gift not always embraced by many leaders.

I have been the beneficiary of great mentors at every level of my career.  From teaching to administration, public speaking to writing books and articles, none of the skills I currently have came from "natural talent".  If I did anything right, it was to seek guidance from those smarter and more experienced than I was.  In fact, tapping into the  wisdom of other professionals continues to be a core tenant of who I am as a person.

BOLD Choice #5 is to become better at simplifying our work.  To work smarter, not harder.  Finding the right people to learn from makes us smarter and saves us time, frustration, and energy so often wasted when we attempt to take on challenges alone.

TAKE ACTION

Think of a professional you know and admire.  Make it a priority to have a conversation with that person and ask them two questions:

1. Who were the people that helped you to be as successful as you are today?
2. What did they teach you that you might pass on to me?

BE BOLD

"When people tell me they've learned from experience, I tell them the trick is to learn from other people's experience."
