Notes of Encouragement

My very first admin position was as an elementary assistant principal.  I was nervous, knew nothing, and had no idea how I would make it through the first year, much less the first day.  A dear friend of mine and mentor, Rebecca, must have picked up on this because she left a small gift on my desk that was waiting for me when I arrived for my first day of work.  It was one of those liquid paperweights that made waves when you moved it around.  Floating on top of the surface was a duck with a big smile on his face.  I thought it was an odd gift until I read the card attached that said, “Stay calm and happy on the surface . . . but paddle like hell below it.”  Even years later, I’m still encouraged by her support of me.

TAKE ACTION

Writing notes of encouragement is all too often considered "outside the daily responsibilities" of many leaders.  This is a huge mistake.  Not just because our colleagues need such encouragement, but because of the joy that leaders miss out on when they offer it. When we write notes of encouragement, we are joyful as leaders.  When we’re joyful, we send a message that “everything is going to be just fine.” You may not realize it, but your students, your parents, and your colleagues are looking to you all the time for encouragement.  Don’t just act encouraged, craft your words carefully and write them down in such a way that will last in the hearts of those who need it most.
