Wed 9 Sep 2009

My personal Bible time this morning was in Proverbs and Ephesians. If you are looking for a quick consistent way to read the B

ible on a daily basis the Proverbs are a great way to go. There are the same number of Proverbs as days in the month. Like a vitamin--take one a day! One of Ephesians primary lessons is about unity. While I was reading it the following thoughts came to me. I hope they bless you like they did me this morning: ============ How to defeat Satan: The Bible says: “Resist the devil and he will flee.” I know the devil loves to sew discord. The Bible tells us to be in unity. It also tells us how to overcome discord: * Eph 4:2-3 NIV - 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. So here are the things we must do to pursue unity: 1. Be completely humble – This means we give others respect and the benefit of the doubt. We don’t tenaciously insist on our way or get annoyed when things don’t go our way. A humble man should realize that he might be wrong—even wh

  The Shack

I finally read The Shack.  It's the latest book that is making the religious circuit.  It's all the buzz.  Here are my thoughts:

My first impression is that the book is weird.  God is presented as a mature African American woman called Papa.  Now come on--a woman called Papa?!  It's explained in the book but sorry--that's just weird.  The Holy Spirit is also presented as a woman (Asian) and Jesus is thankfully presented as an Israeli male.  Perhaps in keeping with that theme He should have been called Yeshua.  God is always presented in the Scriptures in a masculine form.  He is our "Heavenly Father."  So the theology of God is not quite right in this.  The book presents the Trinity (besides the gender question) in a unique light.  God is a mystery and God is One.  The Shack gives us a unique look at this oneness but perhaps leans a bit too much on the three persons of the trinity leaving the reader with the impression that somehow there are three Gods.  It specifically says that isn't the case however I think one can make a case that the impression is still there.  It's not heresy, don't get me wrong but it's definately different."

The book wrestles with some deep philosophical issues and theological issues concerning God's goodness in light of human suffering.  I think the book did an excellent job in this area.  The Book is right up there with CS Lewis, Chesterton and Schaffer in it's dealings with the Philosophical side of our faith.  Overall I think the book has much to offer the mature Christian who can take the good and not be influenced by the bad.  I'm not so sure that it is a good book for the seeker as it presents God in a less than Biblical light in some areas.  However the Book does do a fabulous job in showing one the love of God and that is valuable in its own right.  It was a unique read and brought a tear to my eyes.

  The Rabbi and the Terrorist

The Rabbi and the Terrorist

   By Dennis Prager

(Note from Jan: The office is in year-end mode and we are short of time. I still wanted you to read the comments of Dennis Prager on Mumbai.)

It was obvious to observers around the world that one of the designated targets of the Pakistani Islamist terrorists was the Mumbai Chabad House, the one Jewish center in Mumbai. The 10 Islamic terrorists who came from Pakistan to India chose their targets with great care.

If one assumes that the terrorists' primary goals were to destabilize India, weaken growing Indian-Pakistani cooperation in fighting terrorism, and greatly increase Indian-Pakistani tension, hopefully to the point of military war between the two countries, every one of the targets made strategic sense. Slaughtering as many people as possible in India's major economic center, including as many foreign tourists as possible at Mumbai's finest hotels, also made sense.

But one target seemed to make little sense. In fact, until the attack was over people were uncertain whether the terrorists' attack on the Jewish center known as the Chabad House was part of the original plan or chosen spontaneously. Only when the lone terrorist who was captured told his interrogators that the Chabad House was planned a year earlier was it indisputable that killing the Rabbi, his wife, their children and any other Jews present was part of the plan. The question is why?

Why would a terrorist group of Islamists from Pakistan whose primary goal is to have Pakistan gain control of the third of Kashmir that belongs to India and therefore aimed to destabilize India's major city devote so much of its efforts -- 20 percent of its force of 10 gunmen whose stated goal was to kill 5,000 -- to killing a rabbi and any Jews with him?

The question echoes one from World War II: Why did Hitler devote so much time, money, and manpower in order to murder every Jewish man, woman, and child in every country the Nazis occupied? Why did Hitler -- as documented by the late historian Lucy Dawidowicz in her aptly named book "The War against the Jews" -- weaken the Nazi war effort by diverting money, troops, and military vehicles from fighting the Allies to rounding up Jews and shipping them to death camps?

From the perspective of political scientists, historians, and contemporary journalists, the answer to these questions is not rational. But the non-rationality of an answer is not synonymous with its non-validity.

For the Islamists, as for the Nazis, the destruction of the Jews -- and since 1948, the Jewish state -- is central to their worldview.

If anyone has a better explanation for why Pakistani terrorists, preoccupied with destabilizing India, would expend so much effort at finding the one Jewish center in a country that is essentially devoid of Jews, I would like to hear it.

With all the Pakistani Islamists' hatred of Hindus, they did not attack one Hindu temple in India's major city.

With all their hatred of Christian infidels, the terrorists did not seek out one of the 700,000 Christians in Mumbai.

To reinforce my point, imagine a Basque separatist terrorist organization attacking Madrid. Would the terrorists take time out to murder all those in the Madrid Chabad House? The idea is ludicrous. But no one seems to find it odd that that Pakistani Muslim terrorists who hate India and want it to give up control of Indian Kashmir would send two of its 10 terrorists to kill perhaps the only rabbi in Mumbai. As Newsweek reported during the siege, "Given that Orthodox Jews were being held at gunpoint by mujahideen (sic), it seemed unlikely there would be survivors." Newsweek, like just about everyone else, simply assumes Islamists will murder Jews whenever and wherever possible.  They are right.

For years I have warned that great evils often begin with the murder of Jews, and therefore non-Jews who dismiss Jew-hatred (aka anti-Semitism, aka anti-Zionism), will learn too late that Jew and Israel-haters only begin with Jews but never end with them. When Israeli Jews were almost the only targets of Muslim terrorists, the world dismissed it as a Jewish or Israeli problem. Then it became an American and European and Filipino and Thai and Indonesian and Hindu problem.

It is exquisitely fitting that the same week the murders in Mumbai were taking place, the United Nations General Assembly passed six more anti-Israel resolutions. As it has for decades, the U.N. has again sanctioned hatred for a good and decent country as small on the map of the world as the Chabad House is on the map of Mumbai.

  Snakes with legs

I really enjoy creation science.  Creation science is simply science through the lens of the Bible rather than through the lens of evolution or secular humanism.  There is a great web site with articles and videos about how the Bible is true and how science (even fossils and stuff) validates it time and again.  The site is www.answersingenesis.org

There is also a local creation science organization and one of our elders--Doug Rebok is heavily involved with it.  With the above in mind I share with you a really cool article I found in Israel Today magazine:

Headline News

Wednesday, August 06, 2008Israel Today Staff

Study on snake evolution upholds Bible account
An international team of scientists including a professor from Israel's Technion Institute concluded in a recent study that snakes were once four-legged creatures.
The findings, which were published in the scientific journal Nature, seemed to uphold the account in the biblical Book of Genesis where God curses the serpent for having played a role in deceiving mankind and sentences the creature to thereafter slither on its belly.
The study attributes the change to a slow evolutionary process, but indirectly acknowledges that the loss of limbs was not a positive change for snakes, contradicting the belief of evolutionists that evolutionary changes are always a step forward.

  Checked out by the CIA

When you sit down to dine with a woman on the President’s cabinet and a senior congressman—they tend to watch you.

Time and again, like other pastors in town I have been invited to lead the Pima County Board of Supervisors in prayer (invocation) and also the city council. When I was asked by Pam Ronstadt if I’d do the same for a Tim Bee for Congress meeting I was happy to oblige. As a Pastor who leads a 501(c) (3) I can’t endorse a candidate—I’d be just as happy to pray at a luncheon for the opposition Gabrielle Giffords. However as an individual man in Tucson I certainly have my preference!

I had no idea the “august” company I was to be seated with. When I was told that I’d be seated with the Secretary of Transportation I just assumed it was for the State of Arizona—not the Secretary who sits on President Bush’s cabinet! I learned that those intimidating looking security guards weren’t your run of the mill type—they were CIA. Good thing I didn’t make any sudden lunges for my bread roll!

The fourth leading representative from the House of Congress Tom Cole (Armed Services Committee) from Oklahoma was at the table along with Pima County Supervisor Ann Day. Tim Bee and his lovely wife Grace were also seated with us. Our own Fred Ronstadt former council member emceed the event and his wife Pam was a key player in pulling it all together.

OK – I’m done name dropping now. It’s not like these are all my best buddies, but I definitely enjoyed telling them all about Book of Life and Beth Sar Shalom. I was pleasantly surprised at how down to earth they all seemed to be.

It’s my hope that this won’t be the last time I get to speak with them—perhaps God’s plan includes for me some additional ministry to those He has appointed to public office. Would appreciate your prayers about that.
